Standards
QQ-A250/6, ASTM-B928
Principal Design Features
5083 Aluminum Sheet & Plate has exceptional thermal conductivity and higher strength than 5052. It is highly resistant to attack by seawater and industrial chemicals and is very suitable for welding. 5083 retains exceptional strength after welding and is easily formed.
Applications
5083 is commonly used in marine applications because of its corrosion resistance. It is capable of withstanding extremely low temperatures without brittleness or loss of properties, it is especially suited to the cryogenic market. 5083 is also commonly used for LNG ship construction, storage tanks, high strength welded structures, armor plate, drill rigs and pressure vessels and rail cars. Some industries served include oil & gas, military, commercial and recreational marine, chemical plant and industrial containment vessels.
Machinability
Machinability for 5083 is considered poor for this alloy.
Forming
Excellent
Welding
5083 is readily weldable using arch and resistance techniques.
Heat Treatment
5083 is not heat treatable.

Standards
ASTM-B-247
Principal Design Features
5083 Forged Aluminum Slip-On Flanges are popular types of pipe flanges. This type of flange slides over the end of piping and is then welded in place. These flanges are ideal for lower pressure applications and are easily fitted and welded onto different pipes. Welding flanges onto pipe reduces fabrication costs and utilizes minimum required space in piping systems. Slip-On Flanges are available in a wide variety of sizes and alloys for various applications.
Applications
5083 Forged Aluminum Slip-On Flanges are used in a wide range of industries requiring strong, welded, pipe connections utilizing the minimum available space. Industries include marine, oil & gas, paper pulp, pharmaceuticals, rail, food & beverage to name a few.
Machinability
Machinability for 5083 is considered good.
Forming
Good.
Welding
5083 is readily welded using common welding techniques.
Heat Treatment
5083 Forgings are not heat treatable.

Principal Design Features
Magnesium is the primary alloying agent in the 5xxx series and is one of the most effective and widely used alloying elements for aluminum. Alloys in this series possess moderate to high strength characteristics, as well as good weldablilityand resistance to corrosion in the marine environment. Because of this, aluminum-magnesium alloys are widely used in building and construction, storage tanks, pressure vessels and marine applications. Examples of common alloy applications include: 5052 in electronics, 5083/5086 in marine applications, anodized 5005 sheet for architectural applications and 5182 makes the aluminum beverage can lid. The U.S. military’sBradleyFightingVehicleis made with5083and the 7xxx series aluminum.
